Fitted furniture in March

Window Seats and Shutters around March is a different job from one street to the next. The building stock is college-town Georgian stock, fenland brick farmhouses and rapid new-build growth, so we expect variation before we ever pick up a tape. The exposure here is the driest region in the UK with exposed fen wind, which is exactly the condition that causes shrinkage and joint opening rather than rot in most inland stock. Where we put the effort is shutters that fold back into the reveal without fouling the frame.

Manufacture only starts once the survey figures are agreed with you in writing. Give us the basics and you will have a written figure, not a range that moves later.

A local consideration we always raise: college and listed stock in Cambridge demands exact historic replication.

What we cover locally

Survey visits in March are usually booked within a week. There is no charge for the survey and no obligation to proceed.

Nothing in your house is square in March

Which is the entire reason built-in furniture costs more than flat-pack, and the entire reason it looks better.

01

We scribe to the wall

Every panel is cut to the actual line of the plaster, so there is no tapering gap running down the side of the unit.

02

We measure at three heights

Alcoves are routinely 20 to 40mm wider at the bottom than the top. One measurement is how you end up packing the gap out.

03

We finish off site

Sprayed under workshop conditions, which is a level of finish site application simply cannot reach.

March questions

Do you work in hardwood or softwood?

Both. Engineered hardwood is the default where movement or exposure is a concern, and slow-grown softwood is often the better value choice for painted work in sheltered positions. We will tell you which we would specify and why.

How long does a typical order take?

Most made-to-size orders run six to ten weeks from survey to delivery. Conservation and heavily detailed work can take longer, and we confirm the lead time in writing at quotation rather than leaving it open.

What if the opening is out of square?

Most older openings are. The survey records the actual dimensions at several points and the unit is manufactured to suit, which is the main reason we survey rather than work from the sizes given over the phone.

Can you price from drawings?

Yes. Send a drawing set or a schedule and we will price against it. If anything is ambiguous we will query it before quoting rather than assume and reprice later.

Do you deliver nationwide?

Yes, we deliver across England, Wales and Scotland. Delivery is priced into the quotation so there is no separate charge added later.
